Samsung now offers three years of major Android updates for Galaxy A phones

Samsung Galaxy A52 2

  • Samsung has extended three years of Android OS updates to Galaxy A phones for the first time.
  • This includes “regular” security updates.
  • Only the Galaxy A52 5G qualifies at first, however, as others are stuck with two years.

Samsung isn’t just bringing the latest Galaxy A phones to the US — it’s also bolstering its update policy for those devices. As 9to5Google reports, the tech giant has begun offering three years of major Android updates to A-series devices for the first time.

The new Galaxy A update policy only applies to the A52 5G for now, but it also promises three years of “regular” (likely monthly) security patches. You’ll also get a fourth year of security fixes beyond that, although that may be limited to two releases per year.

The other Galaxy A models, including the A02s, A12, A32, and A42, are still tied to the old update policy. They’ll get two years of major Android and regular security updates, plus another two years of security patches at a likely reduced rate. It’s not clear if or when they’ll get improved support.

Even so, this is an important move. To date, Samsung’s three-year update policy has only applied to flagship-level models like the Galaxy S and Galaxy Fold series — extending it to the Galaxy A line brings that software longevity to a much wider audience. You’ll not only get fresh Android experiences for much of the usable lifespan of your phone, you’ll be protected against security flaws that need timely (if not always urgent) fixes.
